Uber Data Breach Sees Company Given $20k Penalty
Taxi-hailing company Uber has been given a $20,000 fine after a data breach in 2014 saw an unauthorised party access the personal details and licence numbers of its drivers.
A settlement has now been reached with New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman over delays by the company in providing timely notice of the breach to those drivers affected, as well as to the attorney general’s office.
In 2014, an Uber engineer posted an access ID for the company’s third-party cloud storage on Github.com where it was accessible to the public and in May, someone not associated with Uber gained access to the database.
Under the settlement, Uber will also have to maintain and store all GPS-based location information in an environment that is password protected, as well as encrypting any information that is in transit.
