Microsoft Announces First UK Data Centres For Cloud Computing
Microsoft opens cloud computing data centre
UK businesses could find that a range of cloud computing services will become available closer to home, as news breaks that Microsoft is opening its first data centres in the country next year.
Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella unveiled plans for two new data centres while speaking to delegates at the Future Decoded conference on Tuesday November 10th.
The data centres represent a significant investment, with reports suggesting they will cost hundreds of millions of pounds to develop. The company is keen to tackle issues of data privacy, and the announcement means customer and citizen information can be stored in Britain.
Previously, subscribers to Microsoft’s main online cloud computing services, Office 365 and Azure, had their data held in Ireland or the Netherlands. However, these two countries will not be abandoned, with Mr Nadella confirming the company’s intention to grow services in these locations as well.
“By expanding our data centre regions in the UK, Netherlands and Ireland we aim to give local businesses and organisations of all sizes the transformative technology they need to seize new global growth,” he stated in his keynote speech.
The move enables Microsoft to compete for business among organisations that have regulatory requirements to maintain data within the country, such as defence and health agencies. Microsoft already has several well-known UK companies as clients, including Tesco, Confused.com and Pizza Hut.
The announcement came as the Financial Conduct Authority outlined plans to allow the financial services sector to take better advantage of cloud services. The organisation said it saw no reason why firms couldn’t use the cloud provided adequate protective measures were in place.
